Georgia On My Mind
F:I, d: ii-V-i.
On the Fmaj7 chord we are working with the key of one flat. The notes here in orange are the chord tones. The notes in transparent blue are the non-chord tones. It’s important to hear the difference.
Now we’re working with the Em7b5 chord. Notice we have the same note collection, key of one flat. Now the chord tones and non-chord tones corrispond to the new chord sound.
With the V/vi (d: V/i), we alter the note collection to include a C# tone. This comes from D Harmonic Minor. The chord/scale is commonly known as Phrygian Dominant or Mixolydian b9 b13.
Now we resolve to Dm7. We’re back to our original note collection. This is the natural minor, also known as D Aeolian. The chord tones and non-chord tones corrispond to the current harmony.
Practice getting specific with the chord changes and hearing the consonance and dissonance on each chord scale.
