In this post, I’m sharing a visual guide that connects chord shapes directly to the scales that fit over them. It’s a simple but powerful way to see harmony and melody working together across the fretboard. Whether you're improvising or just trying to better understand your options over a G7, this downloadable reference will give you a clearer path forward.
This tune is in the key of G. We start here with this shape. Try out the passing tone as well.
Next we have a ii-V-I progression in the key of F. Notice that the scales are the same for these three chords. The passing tone will change based on the chord and it’s roll.
Now a ii-V in Eb.
Eb7 is our next chord. We’ll work with a mode of Bb Melodic Minor.
The progression takes us to a ii-V-i in the parallel minor.
We have a iii-VI-ii-V
In the second half of the tune, the tune goes to major rather than minor.
This kind of fretboard clarity can make a big difference in both your playing and your confidence. Spend some time with the shapes, and let it guide your practice this week. If you find it helpful—or have questions—feel free to leave a comment or share it with someone who might benefit. More to come soon.
